Carusmate Cut Paste
Carusmate Cut Paste - Bonsai Wound Sealant
When it comes to bonsai wound care, Carusmate (often referred to as the "green tube" cut paste) is the professional's choice for a reason. Unlike thick clays, Carusmate is a liquid-type sealant that provides a flexible, waterproof skin over pruning wounds.
Why Carusmate is Superior to Standard Sealants:
- Rapid Healing: Carusmate contains specific growth-promoting agents that encourage the cambium layer to bridge over the wound faster than standard pastes.
- Weatherproof & Flexible: Unlike clay-based putties that can dry out and fall off in the wind, Carusmate remains flexible. It expands and contracts with the tree as it grows.
- Invisible Protection: It dries to a dark, matte finish that mimics natural bark, ensuring your tree looks its best even during the healing process.
- Easy Application: The liquid-paste consistency allows for precise application with a brush or finger, reaching into deep crevices that clay can’t seal.
How to Apply Carusmate to Bonsai:
- Before applying any sealer, the cut must be clean.
- You can apply Carusmate directly from the tube or use a small brush.
- Squeeze a small amount of the green paste onto the center of the wound.
- Use a small wooden spatula, a dedicated bonsai brush, or even your finger to spread the paste evenly.
- Ensure the paste covers the entire exposed wood and slightly overlaps the edge of the bark. This locks the moisture in and prevents the bark from pulling away as it dries.
- Carusmate usually skins over in about 15–30 minutes, but it takes several hours to dry completely. Avoid watering the tree immediately after application to prevent the paste from washing away before it sets.
- Once dry, it will feel like a flexible, rubbery second skin.
Carusmate VS. Top Jin
Top Jin M is primarily a fungicidal paste. Its active ingredient, Thiophanate-methyl, is a systemic fungicide designed to prevent rot and pathogens from entering the tree through a fresh cut. It is best for Conifers (Pines/Junipers) and trees prone to fungal infections or die-back.
Carusmate is primarily a physical barrier and callus promoter. It acts more like a skin that seals in moisture. While it provides some protection against infection, its main purpose is to help the bark "roll over" a wound. It is best for Deciduous trees (Maples, Elms, Azaleas) where a smooth, invisible heal is the priority.
Pro Tip:
Many professional artists actually use both. They will apply a very thin layer of Top Jin M first to disinfect the wound, let it dry for a few minutes, and then cover it with Carusmate to provide the waterproof seal and growth hormones.
