Copper wire is the "gold standard" for professional bonsai artists, particularly those working with conifers like Pines and Junipers.  Because copper work-hardens (it gets stiffer as you bend it), it offers superior holding power compared to aluminum.

Because copper is so much stronger than aluminum, the sizing rules are different:

0.5mm – 1.0mm:  Fine detailing on Shohin or secondary conifer branches.

1.2mm – 2.0mm:  Standard styling for mid-sized branches.

2.5mm – 3.5mm:  Heavy structural bending and trunk line positioning.

4.0mm+:  Advanced styling for large-scale specimen trees.
